Thank you Chairman Diaz-Balart, Ranking Member Price, for the opportunity to testify on appropriations for the Departments of Transportation and Housing and Urban Development over the next fiscal year.  This legislation will serve as a statement of the commitment from the federal government to address some of our most pressing local needs in the Virgin Islands.

WASHINGTON DC– Just as the newly-convened 115th Congress began this week, Virgin Islands Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett brought the issue of unequal treatment of the territories to the forefront.

Plaskett took the unprecedented and extraordinary step of interrupting the official vote for Speaker of the House to highlight the fact that the Delegates of the Territories are not allowed to cast their vote for the Speaker of the House and are not allowed a vote in Committee of the Whole.

“The shooting death of this innocent child shocks the psyche. It is both senseless and barbaric, and is, sadly, yet another example of why we have offered to work with the local officials to formulate a comprehensive territorial action plan to mitigate the scourge of gun violence in our community.”
