On Wednesday, Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett wielded the gavel as Chair of the Biotechnology, Horticulture and Research Subcommittee for the its first hearing.
The subcommittee received testimony from stakeholders who would be affected by the decision to relocate the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) and USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS) out of Washington, DC. These two agricultural research institutions primarily interact with scientists and policymakers. The relocation risks significant staff loss which would lead to inadequate research.

As a co-chair of the Congressional Caribbean Caucus Congresswoman Plaskett along with Congressman Espaillat of New York hosted a reception to kick off Caribbean-American Heritage Month. Dancers and a moko jumbie from the Virgin Islands provided entertainment, enamoring the crowd.
Together with Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, another co-chair of the caucus, Congresswoman Plaskett honored the iconic Harry Belafonte, with the inaugural Caribbean Caucus Award for his many contributions to the Caribbean community. Co-chair Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, and other Members also gave remarks. |

Over the weekend, Congresswoman Plaskett joined President Clinton and Secretary Hillary Clinton in St. Croix on their visit to the territory.
During a site visit to Lutheran Social Services, the Congresswoman spoke about her mother's own experience with Queen Louise Home, an experience that spurred her to not only give back but sit on the board of Lutheran Social Services.
Earlier that day, Congresswoman Plaskett attended an event held by basketball superstar Tim Duncan at Claude O. Markoe Elementary School. Duncan a
St. Croix native, donated $500,000 through the Tim Duncan Foundation to implement “Yes! Our Kids Can” a program designed to help children from low-income families realize their potential. |

$19.1 Billion Disaster Aid Bill Passed by House and Senate |
Both chambers of Congress passed a bill that provides $19.1 billion in disaster aid to assist areas such as the Virgin Islands, California, and the Midwest that have been struck by the 2017-2018 natural disasters.
The bill contains over $27 million for the Virgin Islands in the form of Community Disaster Block Grants. It also requires FEMA to take into consideration the pre-disaster conditions and other considerations when determining whether a hurricane-damaged structure or facility is repairable or must be replaced, thus promoting resiliency as the islands rebuild.
The bill now goes to the President for signature. |

Last week in Brooklyn, during a series of events on the state of Black America hosted by Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, Congresswoman Plaskett moderated a town hall focused on criminal justice reform.
During the town hall, the Congresswoman discussed some of the unique challenges women and girls face when they enter the criminal justice system. |
