PRESS STATEMENT

STATEMENT FROM CONGRESSWOMAN STACEY E. PLASKETT REGARDING THE JANUARY 6TH STORMING OF THE CAPITOL

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett released the following statement regarding the January 6th storming of the Capitol:

“History will forever regard January 6, 2021, as a dark and disappointing day in American history. On this day our constitutional process and democracy were attacked from within, in an unprecedented attempt to subvert the will of the American people.

“The storming of the United States Capitol, the trampling underfoot and desecration of the halls of Congress this afternoon was a criminal act.. I am demanding that this attempted coup d’état of criminals engaged in domestic terrorism will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

“I am grateful to those members of law enforcement who bravely attempted protected myself, my colleagues, staff, press, and others present. The disrespect and hostility these officers faced protecting the Capitol and the People’s representatives are inexcusable.  The strategy or lack of strategy executed by Capitol Police leadership must be reviewed.

“The irony of peaceful protestors being tear-gassed at the direction of Trump over this summer and his supports teargassing those in the Capitol this evening is not lost on me.  Neither should be lost on us the juxtaposition of the beauty of Americans in Georgia voting into the US Senate the Jewish son of an immigrant and the black son of the southern soil to be Senators while ugly elements of Trump supporters attempt to destroy the very chambers those newly elected Senators are being sent to work .

“In this country governed by the people and formed in objection to tyranny, there is no place for the autocratic tendencies we have witnessed. The violent and threatening acts of an incensed few will not stop Congress from fulfilling our sworn constitutional duty. Congress will certify the legitimate election of President-elect Joseph Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. It is the law, and none of us are above it.”
