Plaskett Statement on Firing of FBI Director James Comey

WASHINGTON, DC—Virgin Islands Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett released the following statement on the firing of Federal Bureau of Investigations Director James Comey:

"The questionable firing of FBI Director James Comey by the President and the admitted advice and influence in this decision by Attorney General Jeff Sessions—who claimed to have recused himself—raises serious concerns for both Democrats and Republicans alike.

“There has been a disservice done to the American public by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Sessions who called for this termination. We cannot afford to sully an investigation as consequential to our democracy as Russia's involvement in influencing the 2016 presidential election. It is for that reason that I, along with Representatives Lieu and Rice, as former prosecutors, called on the Justice Department to appoint an independent special prosecutor in April.

“As a former prosecutor, who worked with Mr. Comey, and as a member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, I will continue the call for Congress to restore the credibility and transparency of this important investigation. The American people deserve to know the truth.”
