Washington, D.C. –Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett (USVI), Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on the Interior, Energy, and Environment released the statement on last night’s military strikes against Syria:

“The entire world must condemn the Assad regime’s criminal use of chemical weapons and send a clear message that there are consequences to such actions. As the congressional representative of a district whose citizens serve in the U.S. Military at a higher rate per capita than most other State in the Union, I am very concerned about President Donald Trump’s military action against Syria without congressional approval. President Trump must come to Congress to seek an Authorization of Use of Military Force and layout a clear strategy to ensure our country and our military avoids another prolonged military conflict in the Middle East.

“As a vital part of our duties, both parties must work together to reassert Congress’ constitutional role and demand that the president obtain an Authorization of Use of Military Force before further escalating this military action. Our military can not be used for ill purposes by any leader and Congress much safeguard our troop's sacred role.

“I thank our men and women in uniform for their professionalism and bravery, and I will always pray for their safety.”
