CONGRESSWOMAN STACEY PLASKETT’S STATEMENT REGARDING THE APPOINTMENT OF JUDGE ROBERT MOLLOY TO THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS

 Washington, DC – Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett released the following statement regarding the nomination of Judge Robert Molloy by President Donald J. Trump to the United States District Court of the Virgin Islands:

“When the White House informed us that they were seeking to nominate a new judge for the United States District Court of the Virgin Islands, I was happy to offer the name of Virgin Islands Superior Court Judge Robert Molloy, a native son of the U.S. Virgin Islands, to be a nominee for the federal judgeship.  

“I have known Judge Molloy for a number of years and I am continually impressed by not just his thoughtfulness and well-reasoned demeanor but his tremendous work ethic on the bench. Judge Molloy has always been extremely competent, both as an attorney and a judge. He has consistently rendered very fair and thoughtful decisions, has moved his docket along and he will undoubtedly be a significant contributor to the U.S. District Court of the Virgin Islands. I will do everything in my power to support his confirmation, and I applaud President Trump for picking such an outstanding candidate for this nomination. We expect the nomination to be sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee for consideration. After a hearing we hope the nominee will be voted favorably out of committee, with a majority vote, and then the nomination is forwarded to the full Senate.  The full Senate then debates and votes on the nomination.

“Judge Molloy’s interest in the law began at a very young age when he worked for his brother, Attorney Jeffrey B.C. Moorhead, filing legal documents and delivering documents to court. He attended law school after working three years for the United States General Services Administration in Washington, District of Columbia, as a financial analyst. Judge Molloy earned his law degree from the American University, Washington College of Law in the District of Columbia.

“Judge Molloy is well-respected by his fellow judges, lawyers and the general public.  He has an impressive resume, and will bring a diverse background of service to the federal bench. His career serving in nearly every aspect of the law offers him a depth of experience and broad range of perspectives that will prove to be invaluable on the United States District Court of the Virgin Island.

“I trust that Judge Molloy will continue the excellence rendered by so many of our own who have served on the federal bench: named such as Almeric Christian, Wilma Lewis and Curtis Gomez come to mind. On behalf of the residents of the Virgin Islands, I would like to thank The Honorable Curtis Gomez for his judicial service as Judge and Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of the US Virgin Islands.”
