PLASKETT RECOGNIZES THE APPOINTMENT OF NIGEL FIELDS AS SUPERINTENDENT OF NATIONAL PARK SERVICE SITES IN U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett (USVI) released the following statement today on the announcement of Nigel A. Fields appointment as superintendent of the Virgin Islands National Park and Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument, effective February 16, 2020: “I am happy that today the National Parks Service (NPS) has named a permanent superintendent for the Virgin Islands National Park and Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument. This selection comes after the NPS engaged in discussion with multiple stakeholders concerned and interested in the VI National Parks and St John. I applaud Mr. Fields for his ongoing efforts to reach out to the residents of St. John in order to engage and inform them regarding the programs that the NPS offers, the interpretation of the Park sites and other important uses of the parks. “From the beginning of my term as Congresswoman, it has been my priority to support a more cooperative relationship between the National Park Service and the Virgin Islands community. As the former Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Interior, Energy and the Environment for the Committee on Oversight and Reform, I conducted hearings, investigations and meetings regarding NPS. I look forward to working with Superintendent and NPS leadership on improving and cultivating a working relationship between our residents and the National Park Service. Selecting dedicated and committed individuals to leadership positions is a step in the right direction towards this effort. I continue to be committed and will advocate for local hires of the Park system, at all levels. “I am presently working to prepare a meeting in the near future for senior leadership of the National Parks to give and update and hear from the residents of St. John regarding plans for the reopening of a resort on St. John. We want the residents of St. John use that time as an opportunity to engage and give ideas to National Parks leadership.” ### |
