Plaskett encourages VI high school seniors to register to vote

In recognition of National Voter Registration Day, Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett is encouraging high school students across the territory to register to vote.

“It’s important that our young people in the territory have all the necessary information to register to vote and that they understand the importance of their participation in the democratic process. Voting among individuals aged 18-24 has historically been lower that of any other age range. Our vote is essentially our voice, and is one of the most powerful actions we can take. Young Virgin Islanders tell me all the time that they don’t exercise their right to vote because they feel that their issues are not a priority for elected officials. But that is actually more of a reason to register and to vote. I want to ensure that we encourage our young people to make their voices heard, and to empower them to be stakeholders in the democratic process,” Plaskett said

Plaskett will be coordinating with the principals of the territory’s high schools to share voter registration information and a letter expressing the importance of civic engagement with each high school senior in the coming days.

“It is my hope that by providing this information, students who may not otherwise have considered registering to vote will be inspired to do so,” Plaskett added.
