CONGRESSWOMAN STACEY E. PLASKETT ANNOUNCES NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRANT TO THE UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett announced the University of the Virgin Islands has been awarded a $33,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. The Congresswoman made the following remarks:
“Coral reef ecosystems of the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Caribbean region provide substantial economic benefits and coastal protection. This $33,000 research grant from the National Science Foundation awarded to the University of the Virgin Islands will fund a project aiming to create a model able to predict the impact of multi-species disease spread of reefs based on the ingathering of coral species. “I would like to extend congratulations the seven UVI students contributing to this valuable research and wish them the best in their efforts. The results of this research may be able to assist in not only better understanding the threats facing these ecosystems but may lead to further research on what we may be able to do to preserve our reefs and the diversity of life in our seas.” ### |
