PRESS STATEMENT

STATEMENT FROM CONGRESSWOMAN STACEY E. PLASKETT ON THE PASSING OF CONGRESSMAN JOHN R. LEWIS

St. Croix, USVI - Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett issued the following statement on the passing of Congressman John R. Lewis:

“Today my family and staff join fellow Americans in mourning the passing of the American hero, John Lewis. He risked his life to make America better, and we are forever grateful for his moral leadership and his tireless fight for a more just society. Although his passing comes during the zenith of the next chapter in the struggle for civil and human rights, he’ll continue to be an example for all of us. Congressman Lewis had the ability to draw out the best in us. On the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, Congressman John Lewis was embraced by America’s first African American President Barack Obama on the bridge, representing a milestone in the fulfillment of hopes and dreams of Congressman Lewis and the foot soldiers who put their lives on the line for the right to vote. Former President George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush joined the Obama family and Congressman Lewis for the momentous occasion.

“Congressman Lewis graced public service with a revolutionary kind of love that was the heart of the American Civil Rights Movement. He never gave in to hatred and divisiveness in politics. He despised injustice and unkind behavior, and he never lost or abandoned hope for the redemption of anyone. He taught his Congressional colleagues to never give up, and never give in on matters of justice. He was always working toward that more perfect union. I was grateful when he invited me to be part of the original group of members of Congress to engage in civil disobedience by engaging in a sit-in to bring gun legislation to the Floor of Congress. He was always engaged in the fights for others.

“Our love and prayers are with the Congressman’s son John-Miles and his family, with Rep Lewis ‘ Chief of Staff Michael Collins and the entire Lewis staff, and his many loved ones. John Lewis is a biblical figure. Beaten, imprisoned, he led on for just causes.  He existed to bring about the Beloved Community as he called it. Giants are leaving us with an example of sacrifice, commitment and love. God help us to continue the Way.”
