CONGRESSWOMAN STACEY E. PLASKETT RELEASES STATEMENT IN HONOR OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett released the following statement in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

“Today, we celebrate Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the most prominent figures of the 20th century, whose principles continue to serve as a guiding light for millions. His staunch belief in peace and faith that a better future requires togetherness continue to resonate strongly at home and across the globe.

“We are still plagued by much of the injustice that Dr. King fought against. We have not however, stopped fighting for the justice that must precede the unity that can exist.

“Dr. King’s words on leadership sit heavily with me as we celebrate our incoming President-elect, while pursuing justice and accountability from the outgoing one: ‘Leaders of sound integrity. Leaders not in love with publicity, but in love with justice. Leaders not in love with money, but in love with humanity. Leaders who can subject their particular egos to the greatness of the cause....Leaders who can stand before the demagogue and damn his treacherous flatteries without winking.’

“I look forward to working with the Biden-Harris administration that will be sworn in this week. It is our prayer that this administration will lead a just and equitable recovery. As we travel on the arc of the moral universe let us remember that it is our duty to bend it towards justice. Let us also remember Dr. King’s sacrifice and service to his fellow man by making this week one where we serve our fellow man.

“Pray for our nation as we engage in our Founders’ promise of the peaceful transfer of power. Pray for our leaders as we attempt to maintain our democracy, those in service as they shield our democracy, and I especially ask that you pray for me as I perform my duty to uphold our Constitution.”
