TURNBULL Washington, DC – Congresswoman Plaskett released the following statement expressing condolences on the passing of former Governor of the Virgin Islands, Charles W. Turnbull. “On this Emancipation Day, I was very saddened to hear of the passing of former Governor Charles Turnbull. A consummate gentleman, Governor Turnbull began his career in public service as a schoolteacher, then progressed to numerous positions in the Virgin Islands Department of Education (VIDE)—assistant principal and principal for Charlotte Amalie High School, then both assistant commissioner and commissioner of the department. At VIDE, he made several impactful strides in establishing a cultural education division and promoting deeper appreciation of Virgin Islands history and culture. “Governor Turnbull was tremendously dedicated to the field of education and the preservation of our Caribbean history and to the people of the Virgin Islands. His commitment to public service, including 2 terms as governor of our territory, is exemplary. “Historian, public servant and educator, Governor Turnbull had a deep love for these Virgin Islands that was reflected in his commitment to each of the roles he held. “I send my prayers for comfort and peace to his loved ones.” ### |
