PLASKETT ISSUES STATEMENT ON CANEEL BAY REDEVELOPMENT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM NATIONAL PARK SERVICE

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett shared the following statement on the National Park Service’s decision to redevelop Caneel Bay and its Finding of No Significant Impact for the Caneel Bay Area Redevelopment and Management Environmental Assessment:

“The National Park Service (NPS) announced today that it will use a competitive commercial services process to select a future developer for the redevelopment of the Caneel Bay property. The NPS analyzed two alternatives in the Caneel Bay Area Redevelopment and Management Environmental Assessment: redevelopment and no redevelopment. The Finding of No Significant Impact provides the selected alternative, redevelopment, and the programmatic approach of the NPS. The NPS will issue a Request for Qualifications (RFQ), and those that successfully respond and meet the criteria will be eligible to respond to the Request for Proposals (RFP) as part of the Caneel Bay developer and lease-holder procurement process.

“The Caneel Bay property plays a vital role in the Virgin Islands’ ability to compete with our Caribbean neighbors. I am hopeful the Caneel Bay redevelopment can accommodate a world-class resort that satisfies the needs of the local workforce and economy. I have urged, and will continue to urge, the NPS to use a transparent, open process that comprehensively considers Virgin Islanders’ voices.”
