PLASKETT ANNOUNCES EXTENSION OF CANEEL BAY REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett released the following statement:

“I am pleased to announce that the National Park Service (NPS) has extended the Request for Qualifications to Operate and Redevelop Overnight Accommodations at Caneel Bay (RFQ), which was released on October 22, 2024, and previously scheduled to close on December 27, 2024. The RFQ was extended by 60-days, until February 28, 2025.

“My office advocated for an increased time for the RFQ as there was a clear need for additional time to engage potentially interested parties given the number of federal and local holidays during the fall-winter season and limited public advertising. The Caneel Bay property impacts the entire Virgin Islands – and plays a vital role in our ability to compete in the tourism space with our Caribbean neighbors. The potential offers received through the RFQ should reflect the interests and the needs of the people of the Virgin Islands and given the magnitude of a potential resort in the area, as such, Caneel should have the adequate time and resources necessary for multitude of voices.  We have also requested that additional timely public engagement take place concerning all actions of the National Parks for the entire Virgin Islands.

“I am hopeful the Caneel Bay redevelopment can accommodate a world-class resort that satisfies the needs of the local workforce, economy and is mindful of the historic and cultural uniqueness of our home. Again, I have urged, and will continue to urge, the NPS to use a transparent, open process that comprehensively considers Virgin Islanders’ voices.”
