For Immediate Release Contact: Tionee Scotland Press Release PLASKETT STATEMENT ON PASSING OF FORMER PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER St. Croix, USVI – Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett released the following statement on the passing of the longest-lived U.S. President, James Carter. “Our country mourns the passing of our former President Jimmy Carter who embodied the mantra of “service above self.” He served the American people not just while he was in public office but distinguished himself as a former US president whose work to bring peace and better our nation and the world extended far beyond his elected position. He was a man of strong convictions and a demonstrative commitment to living out his faith through honest hard work. He leaves a legacy of tremendous advocacy for civil rights and peace. His stance on American leadership in the protection of human rights worldwide helped to disrupt the power of communist regimes during his presidency, and eventually led to the human rights initiatives of the 1980s and 1990s. The people of the Virgin Islands remember fondly his visits to our islands, and his love and respect for the people and culture of our territory. “We have lost another member of a man from “the Greatest Generation”—selfless, patriotic, hardworking, and an example of American can-doism. President Carter’s life inspired many and I know his example will live on for many generations. I offer my deepest condolences to his family, friends and all those who loved him.” ###
