PRESS RELEASE

OFFICES OF CONGRESSWOMAN PLASKETT CLOSED JULY 3-4 FOR EMANCIPATION DAY/INDEPENDENCE HOLIDAY

U.S. Virgin Islands – The offices of Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett on St. Croix, and St. Thomas will be closed on Thursday, July 3rd and Friday, July 4th in observance of the U.S. Virgin Islands Emancipation Day and the Independence Day holidays. All offices will reopen on Monday, July 7th.

Emancipation Day is a day of remembrance where we as Virgin Islanders pay homage to our ancestors and reflect on their bravery and courage. On that day of July 3, 1848, the Virgin Islands became one of only two places in the Western Hemisphere that gained their freedom from enslavement by violent organized overthrow. After months of organization and planning, thousands of enslaved people, including my ancestors, led by General Buddhoe and others, left plantations throughout the island of St Croix and converged at Fort Frederik and demanded their freedom. This significant day, followed closely by July 4th, Independence Day, highlights the American enduring pursuit of freedom and justice. Together these days remind us of the relentless fight for equity and equality.

Should you need assistance during those days when the offices are closed, please call 340-778-5900 on St. Croix or 340-774-4408 on St. Thomas, leave a message and someone will respond in short order.
