Plaskett released the following statement on the passing of Frederick Joseph, longtime labor leader and advocate for the Virgin Islands: "The Virgin Islands has lost a giant with the passing of Mr. Frederick Joseph, affectionately known as "Freddie." My first encounters with Freddie were in the course of negotiations for collective bargaining agreements for various unions within the Government of the Virgin Islands. He was fierce, passionate, and meticulous in his understanding of his people's rights. I enjoyed being jointly affectionately challenged, badgered, and harassed by him and Tito Morales—may his memory be for a blessing. As can happen in the practice of law, when you find worthy competitors, it breeds mutual respect and oftentimes friendships. "Freddie went on to encourage me to run for Congress and then offered advice as I went about the people's business. Even in retirement, he had opinions and passion for his home and our world. His dedication to working families never wavered, and his voice for justice never quieted. "I am grateful for his friendship, and my deepest sympathies go to his family—his wife, daughter, and so many others, especially his swimming group. The Virgin Islands is stronger because of leaders like Freddie Joseph, who fought tirelessly for the rights and dignity of working people. We've lost a great one, but his legacy of advocacy and unwavering commitment to our community will endure. ### |
