PLASKETT ATTENDS CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION LED BY SPEAKER PELOSI TO THE SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS

Washington, DC – This week, Congresswoman Plaskett joins a Congressional delegation to Los Angeles, California, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi for the Ninth Summit of the Americas.  The summit, which is hosted by the U.S. State Department, focuses on “Building a Sustainable, Resilient, and Equitable Future” for the Western Hemisphere.

The Ninth Summit marks the first time the United States has hosted the event since the inaugural meeting in Miami in 1994. As Chair and Host, the United States will work with the region’s stakeholders toward securing leader-level commitments and concrete actions that dramatically improve pandemic response and resilience, promote a green and equitable recovery, build strong and inclusive democracies, and address the root causes of migration.

Congresswoman Plaskett shared the following statement:

“As the Member of Congress who represents the Virgin Islands, the only congressional office within the English-speaking Caribbean, it is an honor to attend the Summit of the Americas with my fellow colleagues. It is my hope that I and other Caribbean leaders who are present will have the opportunity to continue the conversations we began at the Caribbean Financial Access Roundtable in April of this year.

“In my op-ed published by The Hill in May, I shared that the Caribbean region has 14 votes in the United Nations and is being actively courted by China—the Caribbean cannot be ignored. The urgency of the region’s economic crisis and its exacerbation of poverty and exclusion is clear. Holistic engagement by the U.S. on trade and broader economic issues is critical. To this end, I introduced the Caribbean Trade Resolution (H.Res.1047) in the House of Representatives in May. The resolution, if passed, is an important first step toward prioritizing trade and achieving meaningful economic integration with the Caribbean, including Haiti.

“I look forward to further advocacy and proactive solutions that can be implemented collaboratively with the nations at this year’s Summit.”
