PLASKETT STANDS WITH THOSE AFFECTED BY HURRICANE IAN

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Plaskett released the following statement as Hurricane Ian strengthened to a powerful Category 4 storm in its travels to Florida’s Gulf Coast today after knocking out power across all of Cuba.

“The National Hurricane Center warned that Hurricane Ian is expected to cause life-threatening catastrophic storm surge, winds, and flooding in the Florida peninsula. Hurricane Ian is on the cusp of Category 5 strength with maximum sustained winds of almost 155 mph ahead of an expected landfall this afternoon. Only two Category 5 storms have made landfall in the U.S. mainland in the last 30 years, both happened to be in Florida. I am thankful to the 7000 national guard members that are present to help those in despair.

“I am relieved to also know that our Caribbean brothers and sisters in Cuba are working to restore electricity after the storm knocked out power to the entire island on Tuesday night, where at least two people were killed. We are a strong and resilient people in the Caribbean region, and we will get through this together.”

“I will continue to stand with those affected by Hurricane Ian and send my prayers for safety and protection as those in its path weather the effects of this system.”
