PLASKETT ANNOUNCES $74 MILLION FUNDING FOR THE ALEXANDER HENDERSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ON ST. CROIX Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett released the following statement announcing $74,155,208.06 in federal funding to the Virgin Islands Department of Education on St. Croix for the replacement of the Alexander Henderson Elementary School: “I am very pleased that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to award grants to our local agencies to help with the resources needed to rebuild. This award to the V.I. Department of Education on St. Croix is to replace the Alexander Henderson Elementary School which was destroyed during Hurricane Irma and Maria. This award is for replacement to a standard that will be integral for improving our preparedness and resiliency against natural disasters moving forward. “I was pleased to secure provisions into U.S. law that allow FEMA, for the duration of the recovery from Hurricanes Irma and Maria in the Virgin Islands, to rebuild critical infrastructure like schools to incorporate resilient design and features, up to the latest industry building standards and notwithstanding pre-disaster conditions in the Virgin Islands (the standard that normally applies). This project is eligible for this additional assistance. The existing 67,500 square feet facility will be demolished and replaced with a 79,800 square feet facility that will incorporate current building codes and standards. “I am pleased that the appropriated funds will go toward the prudent replacement of these institutions, especially our schools, but there is still more work to be done. We are proud of the work of the Office of Disaster Recovery and the V.I. Department of Education for obtaining the funding and look forward to working with them to ensure the funds are fully utilized.” ### |
