For Immediate Release Contact: Tionee D. Scotland PRESS STATEMENT CONGRESSWOMAN STACEY E. PLASKETT ANNOUNCES GRANT FOR $251 MILLION TO REBUILD THE CHARLES HARWOOD MEDICAL COMPLEX Washington, DC – Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett, a member of the House Ways and Means, Budget and Agriculture Committees, released the following statement announcing a $251 million grant from U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Health’s Charles Harwood Medical Complex: “I am tremendously pleased to announce that FEMA has awarded a grant totalling $251 million to the Virgin Islands Department of Health (VIDOH) for the rebuilding of the Charles Harwood Medical Complex after major damages to the seven buildings and grounds from Hurricane Maria. “Several months ago, my office spearheaded a summit with FEMA, professional staff from the Appropriations Committee, and Governor Bryan’s team. During that summit, agreement was reached on parameters of funding for rebuilding. The first success from that summit was the funding announcement of almost $2 Billion for our water system on St Croix and the rebuild of the Arthur A. Richards School. This announcement from FEMA further demonstrates the importance of advocacy and fighting for what rightly belongs to us. “After the storms of 2017, the Charles Harwood Complex was damaged beyond repair, and even prior had ongoing issues with mold and other problematic conditions. With this critical funding, the V.I. Department of Health will have the resources to have all the buildings within the complex rebuilt to current codes and standards. These funds are long overdue and will serve to help VIDOH rebuild the Charles Harwood Complex not as it was but as it should be. I look forward to following the progress of this much needed project. The people of the Virgin Islands can be assured that I will continue to fight for what is ours.” ### |
